Editorial by Mark

Hi Everybody,

Something happened the other day that made me think about the importance of having an Emergency Roadside Service Plan. We were traveling about 70 mph on a busy Interstate in our truck when the right front tire suddenly blew out. And I mean a major blowout! Something on the road punctured the tire, leaving the entire sidewall in shreds. The sudden loss of all of the air in the tire made it a bit difficult to control the truck and come to a safe stop. I had no choice but to get the truck off the shoulder of the highway a couple of feet so I could work on the tire. This resulted in the truck sitting on an angle, presenting another challenge while using the hydraulic bottle jack. Now I may not be in the best shape I've ever been in but I'm no slouch, and the 17 inch truck tire gave me quite a work out. Changing that tire was a hair raising experience; sitting on an angle with transfer trucks passing well in excess of the 70 mph speed limit, about three feet from the side of the road.

The point I'm trying to make is, if this happened in our motorhome (with 22 inch tires), I would have been in a real mess without an Emergency Roadside Service Plan. You should NEVER attempt to change a tire on a motorhome. RV tires can weigh in excess of 100 pounds (this is why manufacturers don't include jacks and many don't include spare tires anymore). So check out your service plan before you head out on your first camping trip of the year. You'll be glad you did when that tire decides it's time to blow!

Now for some better news. I finished editing our new video, titled "RV Care & Maintenance" last month and sent it out for replication. It should be available in DVD format in a week or two. In the meantime we added it and the "EZ RV Upgrades" title to our instant downloads video collection at http://rvdownloads.com/ The RV Care & Maintenance video is packed with 78 minutes worth of preventive maintenance checks to help maintain and protect your investment.

I also had an opportunity to test a couple of RV products last month. As many of you know, I am a big advocate for properly maintaining and saving RV dump stations. A major factor in saving RV dump stations is using the proper type of holding tank treatment. These treatments should be environmentally friendly and safe for use in septic systems. Some holding tank chemicals are harmful to people, the environment and septic systems. I tested two products called Oxy-Kem and Odor Cide by Winston Company. Both products worked extremely well. Oxy-Kem is the best product I've ever used for RV holding tanks. It's not just a deodorizer, but it cleans too. Up to 500% better than chemical, enzyme and formaldehyde products. It can be used in the black and gray water holding tanks and it comes in convenient drop in packs, so there's no measuring, waste or mess. The oxygen activated technology actually eliminates odors instantly. The OdorCide product actually eliminates odors in the air and on fabric instantly. It is environmentally safe and smells great too. Seriously, all I can really say is try it once and you'll be hooked http://www.winstoncompany.com/

Until next month, happy camping,

RV Spring Checkup

It’s that time of year again; time to get ready for another great camping season. We need to wake the RV up from its deep winter sleep and give it a good spring check up. If we take a little time and check everything out now, the RV will be ready to go when you’re ready to hit the road. In the military this is referred to as preventive maintenance. Maintenance you can perform on your RV before a problem exists. Maintenance designed to prevent or identify potential problems that could lead to mechanical breakdown, malfunction or failure of a component or system on your RV. Basically it consists of cleaning, inspecting, lubricating, adjusting and servicing your RV. Let’s get started.

Q.How do I know if my tow vehicle is capable of handling the weight of a travel trailer or possibly a 5th Wheel and what is the proper hitch work to safely tow it??

Mark says.... This is a subject that is often times overlooked. If you already own the tow vehicle you need to select a trailer that is properly matched for the tow vehicle. A better scenario is to find the travel trailer or fifth wheel you want before you purchase the tow vehicle. This way, you can get a tow vehicle that can safely handle the weight of the trailer you want. I have met many people who were disappointed to find out that their vehicle couldn’t tow the RV they wanted. Most VEHICLE salespeople do not understand tow ratings. Before you purchase a tow vehicle do your research on tow ratings. A reputable RV dealer can usually assist you in determining the correct tow rating for a particular vehicle. Another good source to check tow ratings is http://www.trailerlife.com/output.cfm?id=42175
Each year Trailer Life magazine publishes an annual towing guide. It lists all of the makes and models of vehicles and their tow rating. Pay particular attention to the footnotes.

Consumer feedback about RV Education 101 products

Hi Mark,
I just purchased 2 of your videos from Sandhills RV. They are EXCELLENT!!! I co-own a 40' Safari Cheetah with a friend and we use it to go to dog shows. My friend is very competent in all aspects of the unit as she uses it regularly; I, on the other hand, don't have access to it on a regular basis. I tell you this because for me, it is extremely important to be able to review important points of operating the vehicle when I do get to use it.

Your video Class A Motorhomes 101 is just the thing for that. I commend you on making these videos. It is so much better to SEE what is being done rather than just read or hear about it, and you present the information in an easy to understand, practical way with just enough of the technical considerations without getting confusing. Thank you for providing me with more confidence in handling this big rig. I feel as though I understand better all the intricacies of operating it..... Pat McCormack

Read News from Camping World by Mark Polk..Old TV, New PictureHas this ever happened to you? It's getting late so you stop at a campground to spend the night. You get everything set up and now it's time to relax. You turn the TV on; raise the antenna and all of the channels you are able to pick up come in with a snowy picture, poor color or so much static that you can't even watch the program. If you have been RVing for any amount of time this has probably happened more times than you care to remember......

Types of Fuel Cells In this three- part series, FunRoads.com will take a look at fuel cells, how they work, what they mean to RVers, and what Onan is doing in the area of fuel cells for the RV market. In our last two articles, we talked about fuel cells in the general sense--why the interest, how they work, how they relate to renewable energy, and the common types of fuel cells. In theory, almost any fuel cell could be made into a mobile power source. In practice, the phosphoric acid and molten carbonate technologies are too big and heavy, the direct methanol fuel cells too inefficient for applications requiring more power than portable electronic devices (such as laptop computers) and alkaline fuel cells prohibitively expensive. In this article, we will focus on two types of fuel cells most suitable for mobile power requirements for recreational vehicles (RVs)--Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells, and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs).....Read More

Q & A by Mark Polk

Q: We always turn our refrigerator on several hours (6 to 8) prior to leaving on a trip, but it seems like when we put the food in it just before leaving, it loses its cooling capacity. This is how we were told to do it so I don’t understand why it does this.

A: It is probably due to one of three things. An RV refrigerator does not work like the one in your house. It works off of gravity. The freezer compartment has to cool down completely before it begins to cool the refrigerator. This process can take several hours as you mentioned. I would guess that either the refrigerator has not cooled sufficiently before you put the food in, or the food you are putting in was not already cold, which can quickly change the inside temperature of the refrigerator, or last but not least, you are putting to much food in and not leaving space around the food for air to circulate. Try this the next time you go on a trip, turn the refrigerator on 24 hours before leaving, put only cold food in it prior to leaving and only take a couple of days worth of food, leaving plenty of space for air to circulate. This should solve the problem.

The RV Insurance Corner: Learning About RV Insurance Through Stories and Examples

RV Education 101 feels that prevention is the best protection. We also feel that by adding some real life scenario's of insurance claims, we can help educate you and bring awareness regarding subjects that you may never have considered.

Scheduled Valuable Personal Property

Many RVers travel with expensive personal property such as jewelry, watches, electronics, and even sewing machines. Specialized RV insurance policies provide coverage for loss to personal belongings used in conjunction with the RV. Often, homeowners policies will not pay for personal belongings lost in a collision or stolen from a motor vehicle. Each piece of valuable personal property must be specifically scheduled on the policy. Many RV owners never think to schedule their personal property until they experience a loss and it is too late.

If unsure if you are covered, you may want to check with your insurance agent to see if you have this valuable coverage.

Your RV insurance can and should fit your RV. To get a free RV insurance quote with absolutely no obligation from Explorer RV Insurance Agency, Inc. call 1-888-774-6778. http://www.explorerrv.com

LOCK YOUR DOORS

Always lock RV doors when you're away. It's easy to let your guard down in a comfortable campground. You only plan to step out for a short visit or to the clubhouse. You're certain your new friends would not intrude on your property. However, there may be a visitor (or a stranger) in the park who doesn't respect the property of others. And, remember, the only secure lock on your RV door is the dead bolt. The lock in the door handle is frequently opened and closed with a master key — many RV manufacturers use this same lock in a variety models. My storage department lock will open the locks of most other RV storage doors. Keeping valuables in these areas is not wise without upgrading the locks.

About RV LIVING IN THE 21ST CENTURY
This book is for the new or experienced RVer. There are so many tips from “how to” subjects as well as practical advice on "what to do" when you have medical problems on the road, and how to choose an emergency roadside service. The security tips for your house while you are away and health & safety tips are just a couple of subjects out of many that are invaluable and give you peace of mind! There is so much information we couldn't possibly list it all. RV Education 101 highly recommends this book: RV Living in the 21st Century

I left my position as an RV Sales and F&I manager in 2000 to start my own company, RV Education 101. We produce educational videos, DVDs and e-books on how to use and maintain your RV.
