EDITORIAL BY MARK

Hi Everybody,
I must start by saying congratulations to the Pittsburgh Steelers for winning their sixth championship. It was a real nail biter towards the end and it will go down in the books as one of the best Super Bowl games in history. To all the Cardinal fans who took time to write to me better luck next year!

Well February is here and in the world of RVing that means one thing; it is one month closer to the start of a new camping season. I may have jumped the gun a little by prepping our RV for the 2009 camping season but I couldn't wait, and I'm betting that any freezing temperatures in our part of the country are over for the year. If you're ready to prep your RV for the new camping season you can follow the checklist that I used to get your RV ready to go.

A few weeks ago we launched our new weekly "RV University this Week" newsletter. It is a short concise recap of current RV news, tips and advice. The feedback we received has been positive so we plan to continue with the weekly version. The first week of each month we will continue to send out our regular RV Education 101 newsletter in its place.

In my feature article this month I wrote some general observations about where I see the future of the RV industry going. During hard times like this only the tough will survive and with all of the bad that comes from an economic recession one good thing is companies and industries that survive it will be better than they were before the recession. Take a minute to read the article and post any comments or thoughts you may have. (see feature article below)

Happy Camping,
Mark

Arm Yourself with Qualified RV Buying Information, Before you Buy Your RV! ....
Q: What is a key factor when deciding what type of RV to buy?

Mark Says: Where will you be storing the RV when you’re not using it? Do you have room to store it at your residence and if so are RVs allowed where you live? Many cities and homeowners associations have Covenants, Codes & Restrictions (CCRs) prohibiting RV parking and storage. These considerations often times affect the decision on what type of RV you buy. A pop-up might fit in your garage but a 36-foot Type A motorhome might not even fit in your driveway. If there are codes that won’t allow RV’s where you live, or the RV you want is too big to store at your residence, check into where you can pay to store it. Is the cost and distance reasonable?

JUST ACROSS THE BORDER
by Peggi McDonald, Author of RV Living in the 21st Century

An RV getaway to south Texas Rio Grande Valley is popular with many RVers. It's also an economical place to spend the winter. Highlights include hundreds of quality campgrounds/resorts featuring busy winter activities; great shopping spots; inexpensive RV service facilities; tourist attractions; many eateries and generally warm weather. The beaches of South Padre are never far away either.

On the downside, it's frequently windy so sitting under the awning is not always possible: most park activity directors provide popular social alternatives. Another highlight to a Rio Grande visit is the convenient drive to the Mexican border: park on the U.S. side and simply pay your quarter to walk across a short bridge to hypnotic Progresso. At the end of the bridge awaits a plethora of pharmacies, dentists, doctors, discount department stores, shops, street vendors and beauty salons (featuring bargain-priced quality haircuts, shave, pedicures, manicures, facials and other services). Many quality restaurants serve Mexican and American dishes and intertwine with a wide selection of bars. Two- for-one national drinks during extended happy hours are popular with many budget-minded RVers.

About RV LIVING IN THE 21ST CENTURY
This book is for the new or experienced RVer. There are so many tips from “how to” subjects as well as practical advice on "what to do" when you have medical problems on the road, and how to choose an emergency roadside service. The security tips for your house while you are away and health & safety tips are just a couple of subjects out of many that are invaluable and give you peace of mind! There is so much information we couldn't possibly list it all. RV Education 101 highly recommends this book: RV Living in the 21st Century

THE RV INSURANCE CORNER: Learning About RV Insurance
RV Education 101 feels that prevention is the best protection. We would like to help educate you about insurance claims and bring awareness regarding subjects that you may never have considered.

Liability Limits-

When getting quotes on insurance, you will have to make several decisions about limits. You should pay close consideration to the liability limits you select. Liability coverage protects the insured in the event that the insured’s negligence causes bodily injury or damage to property of others, and the insured is legally required to pay for damages.

Bob Isbell, the RV Team Leader at Explorer RV Insurance Agency, recommends to his clients that they have higher liability limits, and never only carry the state minimum requirements for liability coverage. In the event of a lawsuit, the claimant will pursue damages in correlation with the financial position of the individual causing the damages. Therefore, Bob Isbell personally recommends his clients get liability limits at least as high as “the value of their home plus one year of income.” Bob’s recommendation to clients seeking to reduce their premium is that they raise their deductibles if necessary, rather than decreasing their limits of liability. “After all,” he said, “liability insurance is not very expensive.”

Your RV insurance can and should fit your RV. To get a free RV insurance quote with absolutely no obligation from Explorer RV Insurance Agency, Inc. call 1-888-774-6778. http://www.explorerrv.com

Interested in a Pop-Up?
Many people assume that because most pop-ups are lightweight there are no real concerns when it comes to towing one. If you have a larger vehicle with a good tow rating this may be true, but when your pop-up is loaded for travel it can weigh well over a ton and if you don’t have the proper tow vehicle, hitch work and brakes, towing a pop-up can turn into a disaster. You will need to have a basic understanding of tow vehicle and trailer weights.

Pop Up 101 DVD
Make your camping experience simple, easy and safe "Currently owners of a 1980's model pop up, we watched the Pop Up 101 DVD as Mark took us step by step through the pop up from making sure you haven't overloaded it which can be dangerous, to backing it in at the campground, and how to hook everything up. He includes do's and dont's that not everyone may realize are important. Mark does not speak over your head, he speaks in everyday, easy to understand language. He speaks slowly, but not too slowly making it easy to follow him and repeats a few things in a variety of ways to help the viewer completely understand. Watching the video, it seems as though he is a neighbor, friend, or family member with RVing experience who has come along with you for your first trip in the pop up. -Jason & Michelle Faust..ecampsite.com

RV Q & A by Mark Polk

*NOTE: At Mark's discretion, material might be edited to suit a wide audience. Due to the large volume of material and correspondence we receive, individual replies might not be possible, nor can we acknowledge receipt of submitted material. Selected questions will be answered in future issues of our RV Education 101 newsletter and on our site. Thank-you for your understanding.

Q.1. Hi Mark, For three years we have enjoyed your newsletters and now we are ready to buy a 5th wheel. We had our heart set on a HitchHiker but have recently found out that Nu Wa has ceased operation. The dealers who carry the remaining HH say that the warranties will be honored. We even called Nu Wa and they confirmed.

My question is: Would it be naieve to go ahead and purchase the HH in this situation?

Q.2. I have a question for you about leveling a 5th wheel side to side. My family and I go on about 24 camping trips per calendar year here in Minnesota. We have a 5th wheel and we always try to get it perfectly level. The struggle we always have is side to side leveling. We get the trailer leveled via various sized boards before we unhook it from the truck, but then once we unhook the truck the trailer is almost always slightly out of level side to side. I know that it is caused by the fact that the powered landing gear works in tandem. Do you have any suggestions on how to ensure that we are perfectly level side to side?...Thanks,

General and Unsubscribe Info

About us:

Our goal with RV Education 101 is to provide you with helpful information to make all of your RV experiences more enjoyable. I left my position as an RV Sales and F&I manager in 2000 to start my own company, RV Education 101. We produce educational videos, DVDs and e-books on how to use and maintain your RV. The reason I left my job was due to my concern about the lack of educational and safety awareness material available to the RV consumer, in other words, you. We are a small company. My wife Dawn left her position in RV sales to help start the company and is our Sales and Marketing Director. We currently have a 35-foot Class A motor home. We have two boys, Tyler 12 and Josh 18, both avid RVers and two dogs, Gracie and Buck. Gracie is the good one.
