Editorial by Mark

Hi Everybody,

Our new motorhome is officially one year old today, from the date we purchased it last year. I took it to the dealership for some last minute warranty work, before the coach warranty expires, and we purchased a 5 year, 50,000 mile extended service plan, just in case. I finished with my Spring check up on the RV and we are heading out this weekend for our first camping trip of the season. It's just a short trip to the beach, but we are really looking forward to it.

April was a busy, and productive month for us. I mentioned in last months editorial that our new RV Care & Maintenance DVD was sent off for replication. There was a slight delay, but the order will be shipped to us on 7 May, so keep an eye out for that on our website. In the mean time it is available by instant download at http://www.rvdownloads.com/

I finally got started on a project I have had in the works for a very long time. Based on requests we get from our customers, we have started our RV Education 101 Seminar Series. What is neat about a seminar in video format is you can actually see things detailed and up close. There are also graphics to look at instead of just watching me lecture on a stage..more "hands on". You might say we are adding some advanced 102 RV training to our basic 101 topics. We just finished filming and editing our first seminar series topic titled, "Deep Cycle Battery Care & Maintenance". If you ever had to purchase new deep cycle batteries you can appreciate the need for properly maintaining and caring for your deep cycle batteries. This DVD is 34 minutes long and it covers everything from understanding lead acid batteries, battery ratings, battery types, sizes and configurations, battery maintenance, testing, charging, storage and more. We plan to offer a complete line of seminar topics to assist you with learning more detailed information about your RV. If you have any topics you would like to see added to our seminar series let me know what they are by writing to Mark@rveducation101.com

This new DVD should be available by the 3rd week of May, but if you can't wait that long it is available right now by instant download at http://www.rvdownloads.com/ This month's video tip, "Deep Cycle Battery Tips" is a very short excerpt from the new DVD.

We are also working with Explorer RV Insurance Agency to help educate the RV consumer on specialty RV insurance coverage and other insurance related information that is important to you, the RV consumer. Be sure and check out the new insurance video clip in this months RV Insurance Corner section of the newsletter.

Last but certainly not least and not RV related, we have been helping my sister launch her new website. She is an artist whose specialty is hand painted and hand crafted gourd art. Her work is displayed in several shops and galleries in and around her hometown in Pennsylvania. We have encouraged her to start a website to help broaden her audience. Her new website is in the early stages of development, but if you would like to see some of her work you can visit the site at http://www.allseasonsgourdart.com/ She will be adding more gourd art on a regular basis, so if you're interested check back in every now and again. She told me she has something in the works specifically for RVer's.

Until next month, happy camping,
Mark

RV Inverters

Inverters are nice to have at times when you are dry camping and/or when you don’t have access to 120-volts AC. Batteries produce power in Direct Current (DC) that run at low voltages. Power companies and AC generators produce sine wave Alternating Current (AC), which is used to operate 120-volt appliances and electronic equipment. An inverter takes 12-volt DC power from your RV batteries and electronically changes it to 120-volt AC. Some RVers use an inverter just to watch TV or for their personal computer. .......Read More..

Q.How do I know if the RV I am looking at is in compliance with safety requirements?

Mark says.... The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), http://www.rvia.org/index.htm represents the manufacturers of 95% of all RV’s made in the United States. One thing you will want to do in your search for your RV is verify that the RV manufacturer is a member of the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA). If they are, the RV will have an oval shaped RVIA seal displayed on the exterior, usually by the entrance door. This seal means that the RV manufacturer is in compliance with more than 500 safety requirements regarding electrical, plumbing, heating, and fire and life safety. These safety requirements are established under the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A119.2 Standard for Recreation Vehicles. If you don’t see the seal don’t buy the RV.

Consumer feedback about RV Education 101 products

Hi Mark,
For the past three years we have been doing research and talking to everyone to try to be best informed before we invested in a RV. I must give you, Mark, a lot of credit in helping us decide witch direction to go. I am going to retire in a few years and wanted to be ready for that time. We started out with our sights on a motorcoach but after a lot of research and talking to many RV'ers (fulltime and part-time) we decided a 5th wheel would better serve our needs. After three years of research, I am proud to say that we are now the proud owners of a 39 foot Montego Bay 5th wheel. We will be doing our maiden voyage this spring. With the help of Good Sam members --which I now belong to-- and all the information you have provided over the last couple years, we are looking forward to having a safe and enjoyable first trip. Just wanted to say thank you for doing what you do. I think you are more helpful to more people than you will ever know! ....
Thanks, Thane and Sharon Yoder---Future full timers.

Q & A by Mark Polk

Q:We have been at campgrounds where we notice that the microwave seems to run slower then normal. What causes this to happen?

A:This probably occurs during peak travel season when campgrounds are the busiest. If there is a large demand on electricity the voltage at the campground can vary. What I would recommend is that you get a voltmeter that plugs directly into a 120 Volt outlet. This way you can monitor the voltage coming into the RV, and if it drops below normal you can avoid using appliances (which can damage them) like the air conditioner when voltage drops occur.

Air Conditioner "Short-Cycling" When an air conditioner runs, the compressor builds refrigerant pressure. If the compressor is then shut off, either manually or by satisfying thermostat demand, it must stay off for some period of time, usually 3-4 minutes, to allow pressure in the system to equalize before it can be safely restarted. Trying to restart the air conditioner compressor before pressure equalizes is known as "short-cycling". If an air conditioner is "short-cycled" the results may be; 1) tripped air conditioner circuit breaker; 2) generator shut down on overload; or 3) tripped air conditioner thermal overload. The air conditioner thermal overload will reset itself after the compressor cools. It cannot be reset manually......Read More

HOW I GOT AN ELECTRIC JOLT
Early in our travels fellow RVers told us to check campsite electric connections before plugging in. I didn't pay much attention because I couldn't imagine that a campground's wiring would be incorrect. Then one rainy day while standing in my RV's doorway in bare feet, I touched the frame and received a jolt that could have flattened me if I'd had heart problems. Checking connections revealed we not only had an open ground (that explained the shock) but the negative to positive wires were reversed (reversed polarity). From that time on we have always checked our power using a small device called a ground monitor, available from hardware stores or RV dealers. To test 30-amp circuits we connect a round 15- to 30-amp adapter, plug it into the post and if it reads 'OK,' we're in business. If not, we tell the campground management and move to a different space, if necessary.

    About us:

Our goal with this monthly newsletter is to provide you with helpful information to make all of your RV experiences more enjoyable. I left my position as an RV Sales and F&I manager in 2000 to start my own company, RV Education 101. We produce educational videos, DVDs and e-books on how to use and maintain your RV. The reason I left my job was due to my concern about the lack of educational and safety awareness material available to the RV consumer, in other words, you. We are a small company. My wife Dawn left her position in RV sales to help start the company and is our Sales and Marketing Director. We currently have a 35-foot Class A motor home. We have two boys, Tyler 10 and Josh 16, both avid RVers and two dogs, Gracie and Buck. Gracie is the good one.
