NEW! Motor Home Comparison Guide and Travel Trailer & Fifth Wheel Comparison Guide
"One question I get asked a lot is if there is some type of RV comparison guide available to help the new RV buyer make an educated buying decision. Until recently my answer was always, “Not that I’m aware of”. That was until Randall Eaton decided it was time to put the knowledge into the RV consumer’s hands. Randall is a research analyst and best selling author. Randall and his research team carefully researched popular RV companies and designed a fair rating system to assist you, the RV consumer. These guides compare important considerations like quality of construction, resale value, customer satisfaction, price and much more. The tremendous amount of research that went into these guides makes buying an RV much easier and less stressful. I am pleased to recommend these rating guides to anyone considering an RV. And as an added value you get my “How to Buy an RV, Before you Buy it” instant download e-book absolutely FREE!" by Mark J. Polk, Owner of RV Education 101

Editorial by Mark

Hi Everybody,

Ready or not here it comes, Christmas, New Years, the Super Bowl and before you know it another great camping season. I hope everybody had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Most of November was consumed with our new Miracle Truss building project. After the concrete was poured the majority of the construction process went off without a hitch. My 16 year old son Josh was amazed that we (along with 2 friends of ours) were able to build this type of building ourselves. He got a chance to earn some gas money by helping me with this project.

By the end of November we completed the construction phase and the only thing left to do is to install the garage doors and do the wiring and add some landscaping. It has been a fun project, but I'll be glad when it's all finished.

Our motorhome was at the dealership getting some warranty work done so that worked out well while we worked on the building. Now it's back home, parked in it's new building, winterized and ready to settle in for a couple months of storage.

I would like to take a moment to express our heartfelt sympathy and sorrow over the loss of a good friend of ours and many other people in the RV Industry. Mickey Ivey, the owner and creator of the RV Notebook Software passed away unexpectedly the first part of November. Mickey and his wife were fulfilling their dream of traveling fulltime in their RV. He will be missed by many. His wife and their son will carry on with Mickey's RV Notebook software program.

I hope everybody has a wonderful Christmas and holiday season. Our Christmas sale on all RV Education 101 RV Training Videos/DVDs will continue through 20 December 2006.

Enjoy the newsletter & happy camping,

Mark

How to Buy RV Insurance

Did you know that there are 3 primary channels for buying RV insurance:

  • Through an Agent
  • Buying Direct
  • Online Quote Services

  • Through an Agent Agents represent insurance companies and act as an intermediary between insurance companies and the consumer. There are two different types of agents:

Captive or Exclusive Agents These are agents like State Farm agents who represent a full range of products from one carrier. These agents will usually only sell insurance products from one carrier. As an example, a State Farm agent will only sell State Farm products.

Independent agents These agents typically represent a variety of insurance companies. Therefore, they have the ability to generate competitive quotes from several insurance companies. Independent agents can provide more insurance options for a consumer and help match the consumer’s unique needs and preferences with an appropriate insurance option. For example, Explorer RV Insurance is an independent agency that sells products of National Interstate Insurance Company, Great American Insurance Company, Drive Insurance from Progressive, RLI, PersonalUmbrella.com, and several others.

Buying Direct More and more insurance companies are selling directly to the consumer rather than through agents. Examples of companies doing this are Progressive Direct, and GMAC. Many consumers prefer the independence of shopping for insurance themselves and have a greater comfort level purchasing insurance this way. Many first-time RV insurance buyers, however, prefer the counsel of an agent.

Online Quote Services There are an increasing number of online quote services that help match consumers and insurance providers. As an example, U.S. Insurance Zone www.usinsurancezone.com enables consumers to get quotes. These online quote services don’t sell insurance directly, but facilitate a relationship between interested consumers and insurance providers. In other words, they help match buyers and sellers of insurance.
RV owners can find RV insurance through many RV dealerships and some RV associations too. Some of these organizations have their own internal insurance agencies and licensed agents which enables them to sell insurance policies. Other dealerships and associations have formal referral relationships with insurance agencies or insurance companies that sell direct.

Commercial Usage of RVs If you want to lease/rent your RV, you will first want to explore your insurance options. The cost of insurance for having rental coverage can be very high and few insurance companies offer it. If you rent your RV without such coverage’s, however, there are usually exclusions in your RV policy that prohibit such use. Therefore, if a renter has an accident or causes damage, your insurance company will most likely deny the claim.
If you intend to use your RV for other business uses, such as a mobile hotel, an onsite business location, a mobile service business, or other sales-related uses, the RV must be under a commercial policy. Most commercial vehicle policies do not have specialized RV coverage’s. A few companies, such as National Interstate Insurance Company, offer a commercial policy for RV’s used in business.

Your RV insurance can and should fit your RV. To get a free RV insurance quote with absolutely no obligation from Explorer RV Insurance Agency, Inc. call 1-888-774-6778.

    Happy Camping,

    Tow Bars Wear Out?

Since experience is something you don't usually get until just "after" you need it, I hope you will gain some valuable experience from these topics "before" you need it....

by Peggi McDonald, Author of RV Living in the 21st Century
HOW I GOT AN ELECTRIC JOLT Early in our travels fellow RVers told us to check campsite electric connections before plugging in. I didn't pay much attention because I couldn't imagine that a campground's wiring would be incorrect. Then one rainy day while standing in my RV's doorway in bare feet, I touched the frame and received a jolt that could have flattened me if I'd had heart problems. Checking connections revealed we not only had an open ground (that explained the shock) but the negative to positive wires were reversed (reversed polarity). From that time on we have always checked our power using a small device called a ground monitor, available from hardware stores or RV dealers. To test 30-amp circuits we connect a round 15- to 30-amp adapter, plug it into the post and if it reads 'OK,' we're in business. If not, we tell the campground management and move to a different space, if necessary.

About RV LIVING IN THE 21ST CENTURY
Peggi has taken the best of her internationally-acclaimed first book and has revamped and updated it to reflect the changing technology and rules in post-9/11 North America. This book is for the new or experienced RVer. There are so many tips from “how to” subjects as well as practical advice on "what to do" when you have medical problems on the road, and how to choose an emergency roadside service. The security tips for your house while you are away and health & safety tips are just a couple of subjects out of many that are invaluable and give you peace of mind! There is so much information we couldn't possibly list it all. RV Education 101 highly recommends this book: RV Living in the 21st Century

    Modern Day TV Antenna Technology
Modern technology continues to move forward, and where RV's are concerned, modern technology is making everything on our RV's more user friendly. We become accustomed to all of the luxuries and creature comforts our homes have to offer and we have the same expectations when we travel in our RV. I thoroughly enjoy the 'getting back to nature' aspect of RVing, but I also like to kick back and tune in to some of my favorite television programs when we're camping. Some Terminologies:
by Les Doll...a working certified RV technician & author of Used Rv Buyers Guide

The RV "Toad" A "toad" is a second vehicle that is towed behind a motorhome. This provides a convenient runabout vehicle for shopping or sightseeing, while leaving the motorhome at the RV park.
Towing 4 Down This term refers to the method of towing a vehicle with all four wheels on the ground, as opposed to using a tow dolly or trailer. Some cars can be towed in this manner with no modifications, while others may need specialized equipment.
A tow dolly is a two wheeled trailer that supports the front wheels of the toad, the rear wheels trail along on the ground.
Towing a TrailerThe alternative to towing 4 down, or using a tow dolly, is to use a separate trailer to carry the toad.

Do diesel generators need exercising like gasoline generators? Yes, it helps lubricate the seals and engine components and keeps carbon from building up. Regular exercise also heats up the generator windings and removes or expels excess moisture. In sets equipped with brushes, exercising helps prevent corrosion build up on the slip rings.

    About us:

Our goal with this monthly newsletter is to provide you with helpful information to make all of your RV experiences more enjoyable. I left my position as an RV Sales and F&I manager in 2000 to start my own company, RV Education 101. We produce educational videos, DVDs and e-books on how to use and maintain your RV. The reason I left my job was due to my concern about the lack of educational and safety awareness material available to the RV consumer, in other words, you. We are a small company. My wife Dawn left her position in RV sales to help start the company and is our Sales and Marketing Director. We currently have a 35-foot Class A motor home. We have two boys, Tyler 10 and Josh 16, both avid RVers and two dogs, Gracie and Buck. Gracie is the good one.
