RV News and Stories Let me start at the beginning with Boy Scouts and learning to be prepared. I always carry a pocket knife, just in case (at least until the airlines took exception with it). Then thirty years ago I became a police officer and learned just how important proper training and well maintained equipment can be. Knowing what to do and having access to reference material when out on the road with your family is just being prepared... As our children came along (two boys and one girl), my wife and I decided to take them travelling. We started with a tent, progressed to a pop-up and then to a Class C motorhome. As they got older, we again used a pop-up and now they are almost grown we have a travel trailer for just the two of us.

My career has included more than traditional law enforcement duties. I have been involved with quality audit, policing standards and accreditation and project management for over ten years. Comparing present practices to other industries provides a pro-active method to benchmark against the world’s best. These methods translate well into the world of RVing too. Sharing ideas, innovations and safety practices among fellow enthusiasts is of great importance to us as we near retirement. I am sure that the growing number of RV’ers will find your information useful. It may take a break-down to show them just how important having this information really is.

When I saw your “Just for Fun” degree offer I read your articles and realized that they were worth saving. They provide a good guide to common sense issues faced by all travellers. Although we have learned much through the school of hard knocks, hearing that most RV’ers learned that way too is somewhat comforting. If your material can educate new travellers about the way of the road and the necessity of being self-sufficient, then it is worth the effort. We may think lightly of the “Circle of Trust” but after all, we are all just a bunch of people sitting in a field in little ‘tin’ cans. In my experience, RV’ers feel the inter-dependence with fellow campers and try hard to get along better than in city life.

I wonder if there is a plan for an ‘alumni’ in your university. It seems that the Happy Camper Club is almost there.

Finally, thanks for creating the “U” and I look forward to seeing more articles about developing trends.

Sincerely,

Michael Boothe

RV Education 101 is a North Carolina based Company that produces educational videos on how to use and maintain your RV. Mark Polk, the owner, started in the RV industry as an apprentice technician in the early 1970's. After retiring as a CW3 from the military (where Polk was an automotive maintenance technician, and was in charge of some very large maintenance operations throughout his career) in 1996, he got back into the industry he had a passion for. Polk has an extensive background in RV sales, service and management. He felt so strongly about educating the consumer that he left his position as an RV Sales Manager in 2000 to devote himself full time to his company. Mark’s program includes instructional videos and other materials to make your RVing lifestyle even easier. Mark also provides the RV Savvy segments for the RVTV program and can be seen on the Outdoor Channel.
