Tire blowouts

Hi, It's Mark Polk. Thinking back, I can recall two tire blowouts while RVing. The first one was in our Class C motorhome and I think it happened shortly after the rear outside dual contacted a curb while driving in congested downtown traffic. I'm sure the impact caused the tire to blowout shortly afterwards. The second was on the Jeep I was towing behind our motorhome. I later found out that although they looked like good tires they were actually very old tires. Hopefully that will be all the tire blowouts I will experience.

This Spring while traveling north from Big Bend, Tx. up to Albuquerque N.M. in our 32 ft. Class A, we had 2 blowouts within 4 days. First was the front tire under the driver and second was the inner tire on the dual rear tires, passenger side. Both blew a hole about 4-5 inches in diameter on the inner sidewall. The highways at the time were smooth and can't remember hitting pothole or object. Both times the service people (different tire Cos.) who came to our assistance (sent by Good Sam) told us that the tires showed a date of manufacture that was just over 5 years old, and that that was probably the reason. They recomended that RV tires get changed every 5 years, no matter the shape of tires or amount of tread left.

As a recommendation, we also had BOTH front tires changed the first time and BOTH dual tires on the one side changed the next. Then when we got to Albuquerque we had the other dual tires changed as well, as we were not willing to attempt going home (another 1,000 + miles) with still two 5-year-old tires on the other dual side!

I would like to mention also that I had watched a video on handling an RV (Class A) about 3-4 times a year earler, and recommend that others do the same thing, When it happens it is good to know what to do: both Blowouts sounded like a stick of dynomite going off under your seat and feet so you want to be prepared.... as this can scare you at first . We were lucky that in both places we were on very rural, isolated, low traffic roads, so had lots of place to manoeuver; on a high density Interstate or other highway it could be more important to gain control quickly, once you understand what has occured.

Hi Mark ...
Just returned from a trip and experienced two blowouts within three days of each other. Weights are well within limits and tire pressure is on the money. Tire covers have been used during idle times. Last year I experienced one blowout. All three were in different locations (twin axles). The common denominator seems to be original factory tirs all with a date stamp of mid 2004. The trailer is a 2005. Last year I did 5,000 miles out west with the heat and harsh conditions to go along with it. This year I went to Maine/New Hampshire and experience just awful rod conditions up there. (4,000 mi) I am being told from several different sources that regardless of tread depth and a tires' appearance, that trailer tires begin to deteriorate from the inside and it becomes unsafe around the 4 to 5 year mark. All the tires seem to be made in China and a C rating is the best I can find for 14" tires. Darn, by the time you find out you have a flat, a lot of damage can be done to the wheel well area.

Tire Blowouts

In 2005 while travelling in Canada we experienced 3 blow outs. When we went to a tire dealer we were told that the wrong tires had been furnished with the trailer. Instead of load rangs C, the trailer should have been equipped with load range D tires. The trailer manufacturer has saved a few pennies by providing tires which were not equipped to handle the maximun loaded weight of the trailer. The tires were replaced at no charge to us.
