A Piece of RV History: Ray Frank is the man credited with the term motorhome. In 1953 he built a house car for his family’s use and called it a motorhome. From 1958 to 1962 Ray Frank was building Frank Motorhomes on Dodge chassis’ in Brown City Michigan. In the early 60s he started developing the fiberglass body motorhomes that would later be used in the Travco Dodge motorhome design. One hundred thirty one Travcos were built the first year with an average selling price of $9,000 dollars. One of the motorhomes used by Charles Kuralt and his “on the road crew” for CBS news was a Travco. Ray Frank was inducted in the RV hall of fame as the father of the motorhome.

RV Product Spotlight:

Sunforce 15 Watt Solar Battery Charger
A common problem associated with RVs is dead batteries. There are numerous reasons for dead batteries including not fully charging the battery after using it, parasitic loads on the battery, lack of maintenance and overcharging to name a few.

It is possible for this solar panel to overcharge the battery so you can use the battery clamp connectors to hook it up when you want the solar panel to charge the battery. There is an optional Sunforce 7 Amp Solar Charge Controller available to prevent the battery from overcharging.

Now when I want to take advantage of the sun to help keep my battery topped off all I have to do is connect the battery clamps to the battery. When I don’t want to chance the battery overcharging I can disconnect it and store the ends in the battery box.

Available at Camping World. Don’t leave home without it. ~ Mark Polk

Don’t miss the next episode when Mark installs a brand new tankless water heater and gets ready to start testing some of the systems in the old Yellowstone trailer.

RV Savvy Tips by Mark Polk

RV Electrical Adapters
Electrical adapters are a necessity for RVers. Eventually you will be in a situation where you have to use some type of electrical adapter to make a connection at a campground. It may be an outdated campground or isolated area that only provides 15 or 20-amp electrical service. There are adapters that will go from your RV type plug and size down to household type outlets and adapters that go from household type outlets to campground RV connections. It’s nice to have these adapters on hand when you need them, but you must exercise caution when you use them. If your RV is a 30-amp or 50-amp system and you use an adapter to plug the RV into a 15 or 20-amp outlet this severely limits what you can operate in the RV. The roof air alone will draw up to 15-amps when it initially starts. If you place too much of a demand on electrical adapters, or use them for extended periods of time they can overheat and melt resulting in damage to the RV power cord or electrical system.

“I was actually on the phone with a customer and I apologized for having to hang up on that customer but I did see one of our units go past my window at about 20 miles an hour with no truck in front of it,” said Kohloff. “At that point I realized the weather was a little worse than I first thought.”...........

Camping/RV Battery Chargers- BatteryMINDers® are the new generation of SMART, pulse type "computer-on-a-chip" chargers, that safely charge and maintain all size / type / brands of batteries including starter, deep cycle and sealed types including AGM “dry” made by OPTIMA, ODYSSEY, EXIDE, INTERSTATE, et al. They do all of this without ever overcharging, no matter how long they are left on charge – days-weeks-or even months. Dubbed the chargers with "brains," they are the first to fully-automatically reverse the primary cause of early battery failure known as "sulfation". Sulfated batteries once considered beyond recovery can now be brought back to long-term useful condition. Certain models of BatteryMINDers® can more than double the useful life of new batteries.

About us:

Our goal with RV University This Week is to provide you with helpful information to make all of your RV experiences more enjoyable. I left my position as an RV Sales and F&I manager in 2000 to start my own company, RV Education 101. We produce educational videos, DVDs and e-books on how to use and maintain your RV. The reason I left my job was due to my concern about the lack of educational and safety awareness material available to the RV consumer, in other words, you. We are a small company. My wife Dawn left her position in RV sales to help start the company and is our Sales and Marketing Director. We currently have a 35-foot Class A motor home. We have two boys, Tyler 14 and Josh 20, both avid RVers and three dogs, Roxie, Gracie and Buck.
