Hi Everybody,

I hope you had a great Memorial Day weekend. We loaded the RV and headed to the beach for a few days. There is nothing like a little swimming, fishing and relaxing on the beach to rejuvenate a person. Now the countdown begins leading up to our RV trip to Washington state in June.

We officially launched our new Go for the RV Gold program last week. There were no parades or fanfare, but I was extremely happy to get the program up and running. In a nutshell the Go for the RV Gold program is a self-paced 12-week long RV training program that teaches you everything you need to know about using and maintaining your RV. The training material is delivered right to your computer, so you can learn about your RV in the comfort of your own home.

The program encompasses over 45 one-on-one RV training videos, 50 feature articles, 60 RV tips, membership discounts, a certificate of completion and much more. For more information on the program read the Press Release or watch the Go for the RV Gold program introduction video.

Until next week, plan your trip, travel safe and enjoy your RV experiences. Remember, getting there is half the fun!

Improve your RV’s Efficiency in the Summer Heat Summer is a great time to go camping, but it can be taxing on some of your RV appliances. Here are a few tips on how you can help your RV work more efficiently, and make your camping trips more pleasurable in the summer heat....... Read the article

Mark's RV Quick Tip #1: Do you know what two of the most common repairs made on RV's are? They are repairs to the steps and the TV antenna. Damage to RV steps and TV antennas occur frequently and can be costly to repair. The main reason for these frequent repairs is because you forget to do a walk around of the unit before leaving on a trip or leaving the campground.

Mark's RV Quick Tip #2: Have an emergency supply kit made up and easily accessible. The kit should contain flashlights, batteries, rain ponchos, a portable weather radio, first aid kit, non-perishable packaged or canned food and a manual can opener, blankets, prescription and non-prescription drugs, pet supplies, bottled water and any special items for infants, elderly or disabled family members.

There's something about an RV, from tent trailer to Class A motorhome, that makes it more than the sum of its parts...

Q:
We just bought a 2005 Class A motor home. We plan on towing a vehicle. We have a 2009 Mercury Mariner, automatic transmission. Is this SUV suitable for towing? Also, is there any place around Orange Park FL. that you would recommend for adapting our car for towing? We have not towed a dinghy before as we went from a 5th wheel to this motorhome and are relatively new to the RV world.

Mark Says:
Motorhome magazine publishes a dinghy towing guide each year with vehicles that can be towed with four wheels on the ground. The Mariner is not listed for the 2009 model year vehicles. Here is a link where you can research it, just scroll down to Dinghy Towing Guides

Usually the vehicle manufacturer will include information in the owner's manual about towing the vehicle if it is able to be towed.

There is a company you can check with about modifications to make it tow ready and they might be able to tell you who can do the modifications in your area, if the vehicle can in fact be modified for towing. The name is Remco. Go to remcotowing

Reader Comment:
Here is something your followers might like to know regarding pop ups. During our final trip of last year and our first trip of this year, last week, we had a lot of water drops on the inside of the popup tents. I assumed the tents were worn and simply leaking. I priced replacement tents which were from $620 to over $1100! I talked with a friend at Starcraft who explained that my problem was more likely condensation. He said with my unit being a 1999 model, the tents should last much longer. He made a few suggestions of better venting and temperature control, but also suggested a company at popupgizmos.com which offers insulated coverings for almost every model of popup, which simply go over the tents and clamp to bunk. They start at $49 each. Once in place, they reduce the heat inside on hot summer days, improving the A/C, and keep heat in during colder times. They would also remove the problem of leaking once these tents were actually worn. I am ordering a set to try, as this is a much less expensive way to solve this issue and offers other benefits.

I talked to the owner of popupgizmos.com and he mentioned that the covers they make for pop ups, are particularly helpful on new hybrids too, where the camper is a hard body with fold out popup style tents. He said these units are prone to condensation because of the temperature changes between the hard unit and the tents.

Mark's Response:
Thanks for writing. Pop ups are known to have issues with condensation. The bunk covers sound very interesting, as a cost effective solution to the problem. Please follow up with me on how they actually work once you have a chance to try them.

A product that Mark personally uses: Camping/RV Battery Chargers- BatteryMINDers® are the new generation of SMART, pulse type "computer-on-a-chip" chargers, that safely charge and maintain all size / type / brands of batteries including starter, deep cycle and sealed types including AGM “dry” made by OPTIMA, ODYSSEY, EXIDE, INTERSTATE, et al. They do all of this without ever overcharging, no matter how long they are left on charge – days-weeks-or even months. Dubbed the chargers with "brains," they are the first to fully-automatically reverse the primary cause of early battery failure known as "sulfation". Sulfated batteries once considered beyond recovery can now be brought back to long-term useful condition. Certain models of BatteryMINDers® can more than double the useful life of new batteries.

About us:

Our goal with RV University This Week is to provide you with helpful information to make all of your RV experiences more enjoyable. I left my position as an RV Sales and F&I manager in 2000 to start my own company, RV Education 101. We produce educational videos, DVDs and e-books on how to use and maintain your RV. The reason I left my job was due to my concern about the lack of educational and safety awareness material available to the RV consumer, in other words, you. We are a small company. My wife Dawn left her position in RV sales to help start the company and is our Sales and Marketing Director. We currently have a 35-foot Class A motor home. We have two boys, Tyler 13 and Josh 19, both avid RVers and two dogs, Gracie and Buck. Gracie is the good one.
