KOA now has nearly 460 campgrounds across North America.

"It became obvious last fall that we had to close the loop and get 100 percent participation on KampSight by all KOA campgrounds," said Ott. "We've had to say goodbye to some campgrounds that just weren't willing to make the change. KampSight is now an integral part of being a KOA, and it allows us to continue to set the pace for the rest of the camping industry."

Seven campgrounds chose not to convert to KampSight and have left the KOA system in the past few months. But, 11 existing KOA campgrounds have made the switch to KampSight in 2008, along with 12 new campgrounds just added to the KOA system.

The benefits of having every KOA on KampSight are huge, including:

All KOA campers will now have the same, expedited KampSight-driven check-in experience at every KOA because front desk staff will be able to know who each camper is and what their camping preferences are.

Full utilization of KOA's new Value Kard Rewards program. With KampSight, campgrounds are able to assign Value Kard Rewards points in a timely manner; offer Value Kard Rewards certificates that can be validated at the time of check in; verify that a Value Kard Rewards card is valid; and offer Value Kard Reward cards for sale online.

All KOA campgrounds are now networked to take advantage of Kampground-to-Kampground reservations and Realtime Internet reservations, which gives campers accurate online rate quotes and completes the credit card transaction for reservations.

KampSight allows for more accurate data from KOA's annual Kamper Satisfaction Survey, which provides campground owners with scientifically collected information from their own campers.

KOA owners will not only get up-to-the-minute reports on the performance of their campground, but also more accurate reports on the performance of the entire KOA system. Many of those RV’s are insured with non-specialized coverage. At Explorer Insurance Agency, we realize how significant an investment a RV can be. This article discusses the three coverage options that are the foundation of the specialized RV policy. Each option provides a form of depreciation protection, but provides it in a different manner.

Total Loss Replacement is available to original owners of newer RV’s whose model year is within four years of the current year. This option provides depreciation protection for the first ten model years. If a total loss occurs during the first five model years, the insurance company will replace the RV with its newest model or whatever is most comparable. If a total loss occurs during the second five model years, the insurance company will pay the insured the purchase price that the insured paid for the RV towards the replacement.

Purchase Price Guarantee is available to owners of a used RV purchased within the most recent twelve months and where the model year is no more that ten years old. This option also provides depreciation protection for the first ten model years. If a total loss occurs at any time during the first ten model years, the insurance company will pay the insured the purchase price that the insured paid for the RV towards the replacement.

Agreed Value coverage is available to all owners of bus conversion style RV’s. This option is available only for bus conversions and it provides depreciation protection for three years. The insurance company asks that an appraisal is submitted to provide proof of value and will honor that value in the event of a total loss for three years. The insured has the option to submit a new appraisal every three years to keep this option as long as the insured wants it.

The purchase of an RV is a significant investment for the insured. The idea behind these coverage options is to protect that investment during the years where an unforeseen accident or loss can turn the investment into an unwelcome financial setback.
Your RV insurance can and should fit your RV. Thank-you for your understanding.
------------------------------------------------
Q. I am trying to gather important safety information for our trailer club and I hope you can help us. Basically, here is the theory:
A travel trailer may appear to be safely loaded because the total weight on the axles is within factory specs. But, because the travel trailer has one or two slide-outs on one side, that side of the trailer is carrying, say, 500 to 1,000 more pounds that the other (lighter) side. And that could mean that the tires on the slide-out side are over-loaded and prone to a blow out.

Now, I know that all a person has to do is weigh the trailer at each tire position and then check that weight against the carrying capacity of that tire. But what I need from you is the motivation for club members to do that. Have you read, or have you any experience, or even a feeling, that there are lots of trailers out there with over-loaded tires because of such bad weight distribution left to right?

Would appreciate any insight you may be able to provide. Thanks so much for your time.

Mark Says: This is a really big problem. Not only do things like slide outs add more weight to one side, but packing too much on one side, where the fresh water tank is located and many other things factor in to overloaded tires too.

Rather than go over a lot of the stats in this email here is a link where you can go and download brochures with great information on how to maintain RV tires and how to properly weigh an RV. The one brochure states some interesting facts and stats on the percentage of overloaded RV's based on over 9,000 RV's being weighed at the time the <A href="http://www.bridgestonetrucktires.com/us_eng/rv/index.asp"target="_blank"> brochure was made. It's a real eye opener.

The problem is, as you stated, trying to get people to go to the scales and weigh their RV. It is just one of those things that is confusing, giving the consumer even more reasons not to do it.
I think you will find these brochures helpful and you can print or order copies for as many people as you want.
***********
Q. We like to go camping in early spring and late fall and are wondering if there is a list of trailers, fifth wheels, and or motor homes that are best suited to cold weather and also being exposed to road salt as we live in Wisconsin and often encounter salted roads in early spring and late fall. We currently have a travel trailer without insulated heated tanks but have been told even the ones with the insulated heated tanks are only good down to about 15 degrees F.

Mark Says: RV's really aren't constructed with extreme cold temperatures in mind. Most manufacturers offer some type of cold weather or Arctic package as an option. This usually upgrades the insulation R factor and may include things like heated holding tanks, dual pane glass, enclosed underbelly, larger BTU furnace etc.

Even with a cold weather package you need to exercise caution to protect the RV water system and other components that can be damaged in cold temperatures.

I am not aware of any list of the best RV's for cold weather camping, I think you would need to check with individual RV manufacturers to see if they offer the Arctic package option. I doubt if you will find any RV that is built to withstand a lot of exposure to road salt. It would require a good cleaning after returning from a trip where it was exposed to the salt.

You are probably correct when you say that even RV's with a cold weather package have limitations. I would recommend checking in to what these limitations are before purchasing a unit you plan to use in cold weather.
*********
Q. I have a 1992 Toyota pickup V-6 with a manual transmission and a manual transfer case with a neutral. I want to know if I can tow this pickup behind my 2006 Itasca Spirit 29' motor home on a Ford chassis (E-450, V-10). If I put the transmission in neutral and the transfer case in neutral can I tow it? Also if I can tow it what do you do about the locking steering?

Mark Says: Lots of factors involved here, including weight issues. Unfortunately my towing guides only go back 10 years so I can't say for sure, but a manual transmission and a manual tranfer case with a neutral position are usually good candidates for towing with all four wheels down.

The first thing I suggest is to check the vehicle owners manual. If the vehicle can be towed in this manner it's usually listed in the manual, and it will tell you about any special towing restrictions too, if there are any.

Normally you would leave the key in the on position but not where it is draining the battery. There should be a position where the steering wheel isn't locked but battery power doesn't register. If not you may need to disconnect the negative battery terminal.

Now for the weight issues. First you need to know how much the fully loaded truck weighs. This includes anything you plan to load in it when you go camping. Next verify how much the motorhome can tow and check what the hitch receiver on the back of the motorhome is rated to tow. The motorhome might be rated to tow 6,000 pounds but if the receiver is only rated for 5,000 that's the most you can tow. Possibly the most important rating is the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of the motorhome. This is the maximum weight for the motorhome and the towed vehicle when combined. Look for it on the motorhome weight label or in the owners manual. the two vehicles weighed together cannot exceed this rating.

You also need to look into braking laws. Many states require supplemental brakes on the towed vehicle if it exceeds a certain amount of weight.

I cannot say for sure if your vehicle can be towed with all four wheels down and would recommend you contact the vehicle manufacturer directly. Some vehicles that are configured correctly for towing don't track properly or have other towing issues. If the manufacturer didn't test that year and model it may not be safe to tow.

Copyright 2008 by Mark J. Now that the decision is made we need to figure out what steps to take to prepare the coach and the chassis for camping and traveling. If you’re like me, you want to have some type of logical sequence to follow rather than haphazardly checking the unit out. This is a simple checklist to use so that nothing is overlooked. I prefer to do the majority of spring preparation myself. If you’re more comfortable having someone else do it contact a reputable RV dealer and schedule an appointment to have it done.

Depending on how your unit was winterized it will need to be de-winterized. See Checklist 18 in my <A href="http://rveducation101.com/detailedinformation.asp?ID=1426"target="_blank"> "Checklists for RVers e-book" .

Sanitize the water system. See Checklist 21.

Inspect for water leaks. Check the operation of the toilet

Remove any tape or protective covering that you may have put over LP gas vents or outside vents to keep insects or rodents out. Check any mousetraps you may have put out. Open all doors and compartments and check for rodent intrusion and water damage.

Wash the unit thoroughly. This is a good time to inspect the roof and body seams, and window sealant for cracking that would allow water to get in. Consult a dealer for sealants compatible with these materials.

Inspect the operation of the awning and check the awning fabric. Clean the awning and let the fabric dry thoroughly before rolling it up.

Inspect the tires for signs of dry rot and wear. Inflate all tires to the recommended COLD tire pressure. Check the lug nuts for proper torque.

Lubricate all hinges and locks with spray lubricant.

Inspect and clean the RVs interior.

Plug in any appliances that you unplugged for storage and replace any dry cell batteries you may have removed. This is a good time to put new batteries in items like smoke alarms.

Test the operation of the carbon monoxide alarm, LP gas leak detector and smoke alarm.

Check the fire extinguisher. Be sure it is fully charged.

Reset any breakers you may have turned off. If you removed any fuses for storage re-install them.

Clean or replace air conditioner filters if it wasn’t done prior to storage and remove any covers that were put over air conditioners.

Open vents and windows and air the unit out.

If you removed the coach and chassis batteries for storage install them. Whether they were removed or not check the electrolyte levels, clean the terminals and clamps, and check the charge level in all batteries. Recharge batteries as necessary.

Check the operation of the electric steps if applicable. Lubricate step mechanism.

Test the operation of the hydraulic jacks if applicable. Check hydraulic fluid level.

Test the operation of the back-up camera and monitor if applicable.

If you didn’t change the oil and filters in the generator prior to storage this is a good time to do it. Inspect the generator exhaust system for damage prior to starting. Start and run the generator for two hours with at least a half rated load on it. Consult the generators owner manual for load ratings.

Turn the generator off and plug the unit into shore power. Turn the refrigerator on in the electric mode. Allow sufficient time to cool and check for proper operation.

Check all 12-volt interior lights and accessories.

Test the monitor panel for proper operation.

Check the operation of slide-outs if applicable.

Check the remaining 120-volt appliances for proper operation.

Test the Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) for proper operation.

Turn the refrigerator off, leave the doors open and allow sufficient time for it to get to room temperature so it can be checked in the LP gas mode.

Before I use the LP gas system I have a leak test and gas operating pressure test preformed. A qualified technician with the proper equipment should do these tests.

Once this is accomplished, turn the LP gas valve on and check the operation of all LP gas appliances. Be sure the water heater is full of water before testing the water heater. If a gas appliance is not operating properly have it inspected by a qualified technician. Insects are attracted to the odorant added to LP gas and build nests that can affect the appliance from operating properly.

If your unit was in long-term storage and you didn’t change the engine oil and filter prior to storage this would be a good time to do it

Check all fluid levels in transmission, power steering, engine coolant, engine oil, windshield washer and brakes. Consult vehicle owner’s manual.

Start the engine and check for proper readings on all gauges. Check for proper operation of dash air conditioner.

A full chassis lubrication should be preformed if it wasn’t done prior to storage.

Check the condition of windshield wiper blades and replace if necessary.

Check the operation of all chassis lights.

In addition to this if you have a pop-up or travel trailer the wheel bearings and brakes (if equipped) should be inspected at least once annually. Inspect any canvas for dry rot and tears; inspect all hitch work and coupler for damage. Inspect the breakaway switch and pigtail for proper operation.

This list is not all-inclusive, but it seems to work for me. By this point in time you have a basic idea of what type of RV you want. Tell them what your needs are, what you want, your price range and how you plan to use the RV. A knowledgeable sales person can be a real asset, especially if you are new to RVing. They know the products, prices and what is in the inventory, and can be very helpful if they have some idea of what you want. If you prefer to look by yourself, ask for their business card and keep notes so you can ask any questions you have when you talk with the salesperson later.

RV salespeople should be knowledgeable about the products they sell. Don’t be afraid to ask them questions about the products they offer. How is it constructed? Why should you buy one brand rather than another? What are some of the unique features and benefits of the product? Remember, you are the one taking it home, using it and paying for it, not the salesperson. This is a major investment and you need to know that you are buying the right RV from the right person and the right RV dealership.

Also keep in mind: It is extremely important that you feel comfortable, and trust the sales person. This means it provides protection for claims due to injuries to a passenger in your vehicle (other than you or a family member) or passengers in another vehicle, or pedestrians. It provides you, the owner/operator of a motor vehicle, with protection for your legal liability due to the ownership, maintenance or use of your RV. It is very important to select a limit that is high enough to protect your assets. You may be responsible for any amounts, related to injuries received to the third party, over and above the limit on your insurance policy. You can also purchase a separate umbrella policy that sits over all of your liability limits on your cars, your house and your motorized RV. Thank-you for your understanding.

Q.1. I am trying to gather important safety information for our trailer club and I hope you can help us. Basically, here is the theory:A travel trailer may appear to be safely loaded because the total weight on the axles is within factory specs.

<A href="http://www.rvuniversity.com/article.php/20080407105514643"target="_blank"> Click Here to Read Mark's Answers to RV Q&A by Mark

RV NEWS BITS WORTH READING!

<A href="http://www.motorhomemagazine.com/output.cfm?ID=1549027"target="_blank">Manufacturers Issue Recalls If you own a motorhome check this list of some recent motorhome and chassis recalls

<A href="http://www.miamiherald.com/news/breaking_news/story/486124.html"target="_blank">Frying potatoes blamed for RV blaze Lesson #1 in cooking, don't use water to put out a grease fire!

<A href="http://www.abcnews.go.com/Blotter/popup?id=4515066"target="_blank">Drug-toting RV crisscrosses country... If you owned a $500,000 motorhome how would you plan to use it? That means RV signage will become a permanent part of the manual and all 50 states can then offer the optional use of the RV Friendly symbol.

But the FHWA issued a proposed rulemaking that contains significant changes, in the symbol’s design and placement, relative to the current program that received interim approval in September 2005.

FMCA urges FHWA, in its final rulemaking, to use the same RV Friendly signage requirements and language expressed in the 2005 interim approval. To that effect, FMCA is providing <A href="http://content.dynamicmessenger.com/fmca/?9iTifH7NWJU8oixG2QshZdmMiExtO6Pa9&http://www.fmca.com/motorhomerights/rvfriendly/2008/sample_comments.asp"target="_blank">sample comments for you to copy or adapt and submit to FHWA.

Please take a moment to submit your comments. In doing so, you will be promoting the consistent, widespread use of the existing RV Friendly program as adopted in 2005.

<A href="http://content.dynamicmessenger.com/fmca/?9iTdzH7NgC88oixG2i2hZdmM4l1tlqPa9&http://www.regulations.gov/fdmspublic/component/main?main=SubmitComment&o=09000064803815f0"target="_blank">Read FMCA's sample comments and then submit your comments to FHWA.

Or, go directly to the <A href="http://content.dynamicmessenger.com/fmca/?9i3ifH7JJIUNg91k2QshZdm9iE1tOqma9&http://www.fmca.com/motorhomerights/rvfriendly/2008/sample_comments.asp"target="_blank">Public Comment and Submission Form Read FMCA's sample comments
